Autumn Splendor Tour of New England and Canada
Join Lisa Ball and Cindy Wilcox of Village Church on another Holland America Line voyage along the New England Coast to Atlantic Canada and Quebec. All amazing shores excursions are included in this custom cruise tour package!
Tour Dates: October 4 – 16, 2019
We’ll begin in Boston and visit Bar Harbor, Maine and the gorgeous Acadia National Park; the ports of Sydney and Halifax, Nova Scotia; Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island with a private Anne of Green Gables Tour; see the old world charm of Quebec City; and the cruise portion ending in Montreal.
Then the tour goes on land to find stunning fall foliage drives in the southern part of Quebec called the Eastern Townships to the White Mountains of New Hampshire to the Green Mountains of Vermont. The tour concludes with two nights in magnificent Montreal!
Tour Dates: October 4 – 16, 2019
Day 1 – Friday, October 4: Bean Town – Boston!
Today we fly from Kansas City or your home airport to Boston. Private transportation meets us at Logan International Airport. In the company of a local guide we’ll drive by Boston’s iconic neighborhoods and sites including the North End, Charlestown, West End, Theatre District, Back Bay, Fenway, Prudential, Beacon Hill and Seaport District. The guide will tell us stories from Boston’s colonial past to present day. *Tour is on our private bus; perhaps a little walking; rated: easy
Tour will end at our hotel: The Bostonian Boston Hotel located in historic downtown Boston. A contemporary boutique hotel, the 4-star Bostonian Boston Hotel offers a fantastic location just steps from Boston Harbor, the North End and the Freedom Trail.
We have one night at this hotel with a stay package including free in-room WiFi and a wonderful breakfast.
Evening: Dinner at Lucca North End – We’ll walk the short distance to this lively Italian restaurant offering a delicious three-course dinner accompanied by wine, beer or a soft drink.
Day 2 – Saturday, October 5: A Bostonian Morning
Following breakfast, we’ll meet a local guide from The Freedom Trail Foundation for a fun Walking Tourof historic sites near the hotel. Our costumed guide will show us Boston Common to the Paul Revere House as Boston’s history spans 400 years and we’ll see the best highlights! *Tour is 90 minutes and covers the downtown area near our hotel; rated: easy
Midday at 12 noon: We depart from the hotel using private transportation for the Flynn Cruiseport terminal. After the necessary check-in and security procedures, we board Holland America’s ms Veendam for an exciting 7-night cruise! We’ll see historic port cities in New England, those in Atlantic Canada, cruise down the St. Lawrence River and conclude in the beautiful city of Montréal.
Lunch on Board: Some of the restaurants will be open for you to get a complimentary lunch on board the ship. Exact details will be in your daily itinerary.
Cruise Accommodations: Everyone has a choice of an Ocean-View stateroom or a Vista Suite with a private veranda. Each stateroom has a private bathroom with a hairdryer, nice complimentary toiletries and stewards who turn down your beds and leave funny “towel animals”! The cruise package includes all meals (breakfasts, lunches and dinners); please note: alcoholic beverages/soft drinks and upgraded restaurant options are extra. After boarding, we’ll find our staterooms and meet on deck as the Veendam embarks from Boston Harbor at 4:00 PM.
Shore Excursions Included: Throughout our cruise, Lisa Ball Travel Design has arranged private custom shore excursions and tours at each destination. All are included with your tour package and these excursions/tours are detailed below along with the Holland America schedule on the ms Veendam from October 5 to October 12. Note: Holland America may adjust shore arrival and departure times. The daily itinerary you receive from Lisa Ball Travel Design just prior to the start of the tour will have the most up-to-date schedule as possible and we do receive daily briefings while on board. It is recommended to arrive back on the ship 30 minutes prior to the embarkation time listed.
Evening & Dinner: Each night while on board, we will have dinner seating for our group in the main dining room. This is a lovely three-course dinner that is included; you can however, opt to dine on your own elsewhere on the ship or in your stateroom. The dinner meeting time will be outlined in your daily itinerary.
Day 3 – Sunday, October 6: Bar Harbor, Maine
7:00 AM Port Arrival
Morning: Following breakfast on the ship, a local guide and transportation will meet us at the dock for a private tour of Acadia National Park! This three-hour tour (with lots of photo stops) begins with a drive through historic Bar Harbor then along the 22-mile Park Loop Road. Throughout the tour we’ll see some of the most dramatic scenery in the U.S. including The Precipice and Sand Beach and the gorgeous Ocean Drive section of the loop road. We’ll see the 107-foot high Otter Cliffs to the glacial lake called Jordan Pond nestled in the mountains of Acadia. Further on, we’ll see the magnificent Somes Sound, the only fjord on our continent. The tour will end by driving to the summit of Cadillac Mountain for a stunning 360° view. After the tour, you’ll have time to sample Maine’s foods on your own in the Village Green or the harbor area. 4:00 PM: Our ship departs from Bar Harbor
Day 4 – Monday, October 7: Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada
9:00 AM Port Arrival
Morning: We’ll meet private transportation and a local guide who will show us the beauties of this wonderful city! As we drive by Halifax’s main sites, our guide will regale us with the city’s history and its ties to England, Scotland and Ireland as well as its connection to the Titanic. Further, we’ll travel outside the city to see one of the prettiest lighthouses in Nova Scotia at Peggy’s Cove.
After returning to Halifax in early afternoon, you will have lunch on your own and have time to visit the Maritime Museum or do some shopping. Lisa will give you restaurant tips for some great seafood or maybe a pint in an Irish pub.

Day 5 – Tuesday, October 8: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada
10:00 AM Port Arrival
Midday: After lunch on our ship, we’ll meet local, private transportation in Sydney that takes us further inland on Cape Breton Island to the resort town of Baddeck. Here, we’ll see the scenic Bras D’or Lakesand take time to visit the vastly interesting Alexander Graham Bell Museum. Before returning back to Sydney, we’ll do a photo stop at St. Ann’s Bay area or the Seal Island bridge look-out.
Back in Sydney, you’ll have time to browse through the Colonial Old Town for antiques or time for a relaxing coffee.

Day 6 – Wednesday, October 9: Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island
8:00 AM Port Arrival
Morning: PEI (as the locals refer to their lovely island), is one of the most laid-back and friendly places you’ll visit. Join Lisa on our private transportation as she shows us the highlights of historic Charlottetown (where the Confederation of Canada was born 102 years ago). Then we’ll venture out of town heading toward PEI’s North Shore to see beautiful beaches and we’ll do a pilgrimage stop at the Anne of Green Gables House in Cavendish. Around us are beaches, rolling farmland and orchards. We’ll have lunch at the Prince Edward Island Preserve Company before returning to Charlottetown. PEI Preserve Company is a family-owned restaurant with gardens and a gift shop selling their preserves and teas. You may need to take back a taste of PEI from this shop! Back in town, on your own you can explore the historic core; visit a pretty church; and don’t miss stopping by one of the best ice cream places in North America for a treat at Cows!
Tip: At some of the port stops, locals have set up permanent smaller versions of their gift shops in the buildings where you exit/enter. If you’re interested in finding Canadian clothing, souvenirs and food items you will find some great shopping at the ports, particularly in Halifax and Charlottetown!

Day 7 – Thursday, October 10: Cruising the Gulf of St. Lawrence
Today is a cruise only day; no stops. Enjoy a tranquil day on board the Veendam! Tip: the ship will offer special talks and activities on this day. LBTD recommends going to the captain’s talk about how the ship operates. Information about these talks will be in your daily briefings from the ship.
Day 8 – Friday, October 11: Québec City, Québec, Canada
7:00 AM Port Arrival
Morning: Meet Lisa and two local guides (our group will be split into two smaller groups for this tour) for a Walking Tour of Charming Old Québec. In this city, you will fall in love with the architecture, its narrow streets, and the little boutiques and cafes. This three-hour tour will explore the cradle of French civilization in North America. *LBTD is also providing funicular tickets that take you from the lower Old Town area to the Upper and back (round-trip). Your local guides will explain how to use the funicular. Please note: the streets are cobblestone; please wear appropriate footwear; rated: medium.
After the tour is over, you’ll have time on your own to further discover the quaintness of this marvelous city. Take time to go inside the famed Château Frontenac for a favorite beverage or stroll through a lovely park.
5:00 PM: Our ship departs from Québec City; the rest of the day and evening we will cruise the St. Lawrence River
Day 9 – Saturday, October 12: Montréal, Québec, Canada
7:00 AM Port Arrival
After breakfast on board, we take our luggage and depart from the Veendam. Lisa has arranged for private transportation to meet us and we will travel out of Montréal (we will return later!). On this day, we will take an exquisite road trip through Québec’s southeastern mountainous region known as the Eastern Townships. The fall foliage should be stunning and we’ll drive along a route knows as Chemin des Pères which skirts the majestic Lake Memphremagog towards the stunning St-Benoît-du-Lac Abbey. We’ll stop at the Abbey’s shop where you can purchase artisanal food items or cider made by the monks. In addition, throughout this area there will be nice photo stops along the way.
For lunch, we’ll visit the vineyards at Halte des Pèlerins located in near Sherbrooke, one of the many lovely villages in this region. At Halte des Pèlerins, we’ll see their wine production facilities on a short tour then taste their wines paired with a tasty lunch of local specialties.
Accommodations in the Eastern Townships: Two nights at Le St-Martin Bromont Hotel. This 4-star hotel has country mountain views and is on the edge of the pleasant town of Bromont in the Eastern Townships. With a relaxed, comfortable charm, Le St-Martin Bromont Hotel offers free WiFi and an abundant breakfast buffet.
Evening: Dinner included at the McIntosh Pub which is an easy walk from our hotel!
Day 10 – Sunday, October 13: Fall Foliage in Vermont and
Following breakfast at the hotel, we will trek across the Canadian border to the beautiful states of Vermont and New Hampshire in search of autumn vistas, maple syrup and Robert Frost.
Today, we’ll venture south to the Green Mountains of Vermont and stop in the picturesque village of Stowe. Here, you will have a brief time to stroll along Main Street and stop in a shop or two. Then we’ll drive one of Vermont’s most beautiful byways between Stowe and Waterbury and on to the beautiful White Mountains region of New Hampshire. Along the way will be mile after mile of exquisite leaf peeping views!
Lunch: We gather at the rek’ lis Brewing Company in Bethlehem, New Hampshire for fantastic food and a taste of their craft brews (other beverages are available). This casual and fun eatery is in a converted farmhouse with sweeping views over the mountains.
Following our lunch, we will visit The Rocks, a unique area of conservation where we will have a Maple Syrup Experience! In this scenic setting, featuring original turn-of-the-century buildings, we’ll learn about the maple sugaring process and how sweet treats are made! The Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests, which owns The Rocks, worked in collaboration with the New Hampshire Maple Producers Association to create this unique and tasty educational experience.
Continuing on nearby in Franconia, we’ll visit The Robert Frost Place which has a display in the barn about Frost’s life in New Hampshire and you can walk along the short poetry trail. The views from his farmhouse porch will be another breathtaking experience! Note: dust off your poetry books as we will do our own poetry reading this day on the bus!
Evening: Return to our hotel in Bromont for relaxation time and dinner on your own in town.
Day 11 – Monday, October 14: Discover Magnificent Montréal
Following breakfast at the hotel, we board our private transportation and journey back to Montréal. Before hitting the big city though, we’ll take time for one more meandering drive in the area made famous by author Louise Penny and her series of best-selling detective novels set in the Eastern Townships!
On arriving in the city, we’ll meet a local guide (one of the best!) who will join us on our bus and give us a highlights tour. We’ll even go to a park to see the tapestry of fall color surrounding the city. The tour will end in Montréal’s Old Town with a guided tour inside the Notre-Dame Basilica, the jewel of Québec. *Tour will be three hours; this will mainly be a driving tour though there is one vantage point where we will park and walk a bit to reach the view. The walk is up an incline; rated: easy to medium
Accommodations in Old Town Montréal: Two nights at Hôtel Bonaparte, an exquisite boutique hotel with a courtyard overlooking the Basilica. Our stay package includes free WiFi and a wonderful breakfast each morning.
Evening: *Exclusive for this tour: The special Aura show of sonic lights and orchestral music at the Notre-Dame Basilica!* This 45-minute show will highlight the grandeur of the Basilica’s architecture like nothing else and you will be dazzled!
Afterwards, dinner is on your own; there is a plethora of lovely restaurants to fun pubs near our hotel and the Basilica. Lisa will offer tips on some of her favorites.
Day 12 – Tuesday, October 15: Exploring Montréal
Following breakfast at the hotel, you have a brilliant day in store seeing the sights of Montréal. Stay in the Old Town and walk its interesting streets; stroll to the piers overlooking the St. Lawrence River; or visit the Bonsecours Market housing shops selling unique crafts of Québec. Montréal also has many world-class museums: Montréal Museum of Fine Arts; Biodome de Montréal (natural history museum); or the Château Ramezay Historic Site. Lunch is on your own.
Evening: Celebration Dinner in at Restaurant Bonaparte. This is one of the best restaurants in Montréal and it is right at our hotel! At this dinner we will toast leaf peeping time and our fantastic tour of New England and Canada!
Day 13: Wednesday, October 16: Return Home
Following breakfast at the hotel, private transportation will take us to Montréal’s Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport for our return flight to Kansas City or your home airport.

The Autumn Splendor of New England and Canada Tour is inclusive of round-trip airfare, the 7-night cruise, accommodations at carefully selected 4-star hotels, all custom shore excursions during the cruise, other sight-seeing activities during the land portion and most meals.
- Round-trip airfare: Kansas City to Boston; Montréal to Kansas City; Lisa Ball Travel Design can arrange flights from other airports to meet group in Boston or return you to your home airport. Deviations are also possible; going early to Boston or staying longer in Canada, for example; note: a $50 deviation fee will apply.
- 7-Night Cruise of New England and Canada on Holland America Line’s ms Veendam. All cruise inclusions apply: ensuite stateroom, meals and entertainment on board. Stateroom types are Ocean-View (with unobstructed ocean view) or the Vista Suite with a private veranda. Note: Upgraded meals and all alcoholic beverages/soft drinks are extra.
- Shore excursions at each destination during cruise are included (Boston, Bar Harbor, Halifax, Sydney, Charlottetown and Québec City). All tours and excursions are private for our group and are designed by Lisa Ball Travel Design as described in the itinerary. Deposits and Payments:
A deposit of $700 per person will secure your spot on this tour due immediately at sign-up. The deposit goes toward your base tour costs.
Thereafter, there are two payments: one half of remaining amount due March 1, 2019 and the final payment due May 1, 2019.

Airfare Deviation Fees and Departure from other U.S. Cities:
If you plan on going early or staying longer, please note there is an additional $50 per person deviation fee. This cost is due to the extra time involved in making individual travel arrangements. If you live in another city other than Kansas City, the tour director can arrange for you to meet the group in Boston or return from Montréal to a different city; Note: additional costs from the airline may apply. *Please tell LBTD as soon as possible if you plan on deviating or wish to depart from a different U.S. city
Please note: The tour cost does not include travel insurance as this cost is based on the traveler’s age. If you have a pre-existing health condition and you wish to obtain travel insurance, you must do so within two weeks of paying your deposit to LBTD. If you must cancel your participation with this tour please note May 1, 2019 is the tour cut-off date. Canceling before May 1, 2019, LBTD will refund your deposit and any monies you have paid prior to this date. Canceling on May 1, 2019 or after, there is no refund. If you cancel the tour and you have purchased travel insurance and qualify for a refund through the insurance company, LBTD will work with your insurance company to provide the necessary paperwork so you can receive a reimbursement from the insurance company.
All participants in this tour must fill out a Passport Information document; complete the Personal ID form giving LBTD known information on your basic health condition, any known allergies, food/diet restrictions and your emergency contacts; and sign and date the Tour Waiver form. These documents will be mailed or emailed to you at sign-up.
Needed Documents to Travel:
A valid U.S. Passport for Canada: please check your passport’s expiration date. If you need to renew, you can do this online at travel.state.gov.
Prior to departure day, LBTD will host a gathering to present travel and packing tips, offer information on the Canadian currency, and give useful documents and articles about the places we will visit.
